Black and White

Black and white photography often works with a drama and clarity lacking in the same color images. With the surface energy and distractions of color out of the way, you see straight to the essential elements: faces, lines, and patterns. I have many of these same photos included in my color gallery, but I consider them different photos there.

Color

The vibrance and energy of color photography works well to capture the flavor and sense of life in Japan. My black and white images tend to focus more on the essential elements of characters, lines, and drama in the moment. These color images are better at conveying whole scenes, and sometimes even the individual elements come out with more force and clarity in color. I have included some photos in both the color and black and white galleries. I do that when I think both images are strong, and I consider both photos different ways of seeing the same scene.
